Things unlawful for the person who is ritually impure
First of all
Check here for things that make Ghusl obligatory
The things you can't do when the need for Ghusl arise are
1. It is Unlawful for a person in the state of Junub to touch or hold the Quran.
Meaning of Junub: Junub is a term which refer’s to a person’s state where they are unable to perform salah, enter the praying part of a masjid or read Quran as they are impure. Everything else is permissible. Such impurity can be due to sexual intercourse, semen discharge etc. (See more)
2. Cannot read or recite the Quran
Woman in state of Junub can still recite the Quran from her memory or read without touching or holding the Quran but by simply looking at it. ONLY for those that take longer period (like: menstruation and blood flow after birth). She can limit the recitation to the passage which she is afraid of forgetting. It is Unlawful for men to recite Quran, Ghusl should be performed when the need arise.
3. Solat is unlawful in the state of Junub.
[Quran 4:43
" O you who believe! Do not approach Salah while you are in a drunken state until you know what you are saying, nor while junub (sexually impure), except while passing through, until you bathe (your entire body)... ” .]
4. Both obligatory and non obligatory fast is unlawful in the state of Junub.
Regarding this, someone who became Junub as a result of sexual intercourse from the previous night can still eat sahur to fast the next day and should perform Ghusl later.
But someone Junub came from menstruation or blood flow after child birth cannot and should not fast.
That is because of the hadith of ‘Aa’ishah and Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them), who said: We testify that if the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) woke up junub in the morning, not as the result of a wet dream, he would do ghusl then fast.
5. It is Unlawful for a person in the state of Junub to enter Mosque.
[Quran 4:43
" O you who believe! Do not approach Salah while you are in a drunken state until you know what you are saying, nor while junub (sexually impure), except while passing through, until you bathe (your entire body)....” ]
So if a person is in a state of janabah he/she is allowed to pass through the masjid without sitting or spending time.
6. During Hajj or Umura only tawaf is not allowed
The Mother of the Believers Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) said, “We left with the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) for the pilgrimage. When we were in Sarif (a place close to Makkah) I began to menstruate. The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) approached me and I was crying. He said, ‘Did you get your period?’ I said, ‘Yes’ He said, ‘Verily this is a matter Allah has written upon the girls of Prophet Adam (Allah bless him). Do all the actions of the pilgrimage except the tawaf.’ [Bukhari]
7. It is Unlawful for Muslim men to have sexual intercouse with their menstruating wives
He (Allah bless him and give him peace) told the Companions (Allah be pleased with them) to interact with menstruating women in their usual manner, with the exception of engaging in sexual intercourse which is prohibited in Islam by consensus.
Below are the things you can do in Junub state
1. You can do dhikr
It is permissible for a person, if he is junub, to make du’aa’ to Allaah and remember Him, including the adhkaar before sleeping, dua for protection before entering toilet and others, because of what is reported in the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), who said, “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to remember Allaah in all circumstances.” (Narrated by Muslim, al-Hayd , 558).
Some of the commentators on this hadeeth said: this hadeeth is stating a basic principle, which is the remembrance of Allaah in all circumstances, even when one is in a state of minor or major impurity. Dhikr in the form of tasbeeh (saying ‘ Subhaan Allaah’ ), tahleel (saying ‘Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah’ ), takbeer (saying ‘ Allaahu akbar’ ), tahmeed (saying ‘ al-hamdu Lillaah’ ) and other similar adhkaar is permissible in all situations, according to the consensus of the Muslims. What is forbidden is dhikr that consists of reciting Qur’aan, a full aayah or more, whether that is read from the Mus-haf or recited by heart, because the prohibition of doing so has been narrated. But it is mustahabb for the person who is junub to wash his private parts and do wudoo’ when he wants to go to sleep, because of what is stated in the hadeeth of ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him), who said, “O Messenger of Allaah, may one of us sleep when he is junub?” He said, “Yes, if he does wudoo’.”
